Introduction to the work of Alice Peragine, followed by an artist talk
During its opening month, KUNSTRAUM 53 focused on the phenomenon of obsolete spatial conditions—unintended vacancies like empty shopfronts and abandoned office buildings in Hildesheim. The program questioned how artistic interventions inhabit these vacant urban spaces and transform unintended obsolescence into sites of potential usefulness and performance.
The opening featured performances by Alice Peragine (SIDEWALKS to SUPERIMPOSE) and Rizki Resa Utama / OQ (Hello, what’s your name?). Peragine performatively investigated the spatial mechanics of display. By rolling out painter's fleece and photographic backdrop paper, her work established a process-driven boundary between public and gallery space. Through deceleration and continuous observation, her installation highlighted how moving bodies and objects leave traces, blurring controlled structures with fleeting situations.
Simultaneously, Rizki Resa Utama examined the relational dependencies between human behavior, identity, and spatial organization. His performance invited audience participation to explore how social gestures, language, and acts of greeting evoke feelings of familiarity or strangeness across cultures.
Alice Peragine (b. 1986, Munich) studied at HfBK Hamburg and the San Francisco Art Institute. Rizki Resa Utama (b. 1982, Bandung, Indonesia) studied at HBK Braunschweig, where he became a master student of Candice Breitz.
