IM_MOBILITIES brings together works from the fields of media art, installation, sound and photography that were created over a period of almost three decades (from 1989 to 2017) and deal with the social, political, economic and technological upheavals that affect global mobility dynamics and to which the subject must constantly relate anew.
What connections, tensions and contradictions exist between categorizations, practices and policies of mobility, territorial border regimes and notions of space and identity?
The individual positions are framed by Leipzig-based artist Paula Gehrmann’s flexible display modules, which sit at the interface of sculpture and architecture. Her variable construction DISPLAY (2016–17) addresses the theme through exhibition architecture, questioning its function to structure information and direct visual axes, while highlighting the constant process of (re)contextualization that artworks and spaces undergo.
Alongside the artistic works, a collection of materials complements the exhibition on three levels. It features key documents from the artistic and curatorial research process, as well as documentation of past exhibition projects that each explore the complex subject from a specific perspective. Ultimately, the collection examines how artists and curators negotiate mobility in exhibitions and symposia, looking at the resulting imagery, discourses, and their impact on how the object is perceived.
Programme
• Saturday, 03.06. & Sunday, 04.06.
PHOTO WALK: investigating invisible borders
11 am - 4 pm each day
The "PHOTO WALK: investigating invisible borders" takes participants along the borders of Leipzig's so-called "Residenzpflicht" and residence obligation, whose legal stipulations restrict the freedom of movement and choice of residence of many refugees. Guided by the photographers Tamara Stoll and Mo Zaboli, the participants document this invisible border, cross it and make it photographically visible. A selection of the resulting photo documentations will then be integrated into the exhibition.
Languages: German, English, Arabic, Persian
The PHOTO WALK takes place in cooperation with interaction Leipzig e.V.

ARTISTS' TALK AND DISCUSSION
"Showing im_mobility - Mobility (paradigms) in artistic and curatorial practice" with Rheim Alkadhi and Joana Moll, 6 pm
As part of the event "Showing im_mobility", the artists Rheim Alkadhi and Joana Moll will provide insights into their artistic practice. While Rheim Alkadhi's practice is characterized by site-specific work and the associated movement through physical geographies, Joana Moll's works are located in digital space. Both deal with borders and border concepts in subversive and very different ways and have become public in different contexts. The discussion will also address the question of how curatorial gestures and participation in thematic group exhibitions affect the 'movement of meanings' through the reception and categorization of artistic work.
